Apartment in LONDON, Great Britain

Our street is calm and quiet, despite being so central. And our home is modest and comfortable: Our house is a typical London Victorian, 4 storey, yellow brick terraced house.

The house is divided into two apartments. You will have the upstairs apartment:

·     Living room with TV, Youview TV box, sofa-bed (sleeps 2)
·     Well-equipped kitchen/dining room, dishwasher, washing machine
·     2 bedrooms upstairs (one with double bed, one with single bed)
·     Bathroom with bath and shower
·     2 separate toilets (one is upstairs, near the bedrooms)
·     Sunny roof terrace for evening sunshine, with table and chairs

We will be just us two in October – Frank and Marnie. Our younger son, Hugh, will stay in the separate apartment, downstairs.

We don't have a car, and would like an exchange close enough to a train station that we can get to your home on foot or by bus or tram.

There is one bicycle here (it lives in the street, in a bike locker). And it's easy to pick up a hire bike if you need more – there are several docking stations in our neighbourhood. You just pay with your credit card.

If you have bicycles we can use, that would be great!

About the neighborhood

If you want to enjoy London ...

Our home is a great place to start your tour of London: jump on a bus and be at London Bridge, Westminster, Oxford Street or Victoria in 10-20 minutes. Or if you prefer, take the Underground ('Tube'): Oval Station is just 2 minutes from our door.

What London has to offer …

London is full of wonderful museums and art galleries, and for many of them you don't have to pay. Tate Modern, St Pauls Cathedral, the British Museum, Tower Bridge and the Tower of London are all just a bus-ride from our home. The Science Museum, Natural History Museum, Victoria & Albert Museum at South Kensington are 30 minutes away by tube.

The River Thames is just 10 minutes' walk away: you can walk along the river and be opposite Big Ben or at the London Eye in 20 minutes, and at the South Bank's theatres and restaurants in half an hour.
We love to catch a boat down the Thames to Greenwich, to the National Maritime Museum and Royal Observatory.

If you like being outdoors, cycle along the Thames Path to Kew Gardens or Hampton Court. We have 1 bicycle you can use. For short journeys in London, you can pick up a Santander Bike from one of the hire stations all over central London. There's one just around the corner from our house – two minutes away.

Closer to home …

The Imperial War Museum and Tate Britain (art gallery) are 15-20 minutes from our home, on foot. Do you love food? Borough Market – a gourmet's paradise – is just a short ride away by bus or underground.

Just 2 kilometres to the south you'll find Brixton, with its lively market, restaurants and cafés, cinema and leisure centre. You can find fruit and vegetables from the West Indies and Africa, and market stalls serving delicious take-away food, in the market. Brixton is THE foodie place to be in London right now - there are lots of trendy cafés and restaurants in the old covered market, serving every kind of food! The Ritzy cinema is our local: it has a good café and 4 screens. Brixton Leisure Centre has all the facilities you need to keep fit, including a fantastic swimming pool. And there's a new, smaller pool at Vauxhall.
And if it gets too hot for sightseeing, catch a bus to Brockwell Lido for a refreshing swim. It's an outdoor pool, just south of Brixton.

Just around the corner …

There are many small shops and cafés near our house: Cable Café for coffee and pastries, Adulis for Ethiopian food, Taro for Japanese. And leafy Kennington Park, with its tennis courts, playground, and Flower Garden, is just over the road. Collective Café, in the park, does organic coffee, yummy pastries, and delicious organic sourdough pizzas.

And if you like cricket, Oval Cricket ground is just around the corner.

Every Saturday, there's a small Farmers' Market in the churchyard at the end of our street where you can buy fresh fruit and vegetables, meat, fish, eggs, cheese and bread. It's a great place to pick up lunch, too!

To reach us …

Coming by train? It's just 25 minutes on the Underground to the Eurostar terminus at St Pancras International. Gatwick Airport is a 35-minute train journey from Victoria, non-stop on the Gatwick Express: you can be there in an hour.

Frank & Marnie have been together for 50 years. Frank is a lawyer (retired). He is learning to play the saxophone, and to speak Spanish, and grows vegetables and fruit on our allotment. Marnie trained as a graphic designer, and worked in publishing for 25 years. Now she makes gluten-free cakes which she sells on her website. Our younger son Hugh (28) lives in the upstairs apartment with us. Our older son Max, his wife Sangita and their son (3) lived with us during the Covid pandemic - they now have their own home in north London.
In the summer, we will travel with Max and Sangita and their son, and Hugh and his girlfriend.
But for our October exchange, it's just us two – Hugh will stay in the downstairs apartment while you are here.
