Unique and lovely family home on a Scottish Island, two hours from Glasgow. Close to the beach.

We live in the lovely village of Whiting Bay on the Isle of Arran. Our home is an architect-designed self build which we moved into in 2022. Our location is in the heart of the village and only a few minutes walk from the local beach, but sits in a small group of houses accessed from a private driveway. The house itself has four bedrooms and three bathrooms. The centrepiece is a striking open-plan living room and kitchen area with a vaulted ceiling with a green oak frame. There is a cosy log-burner stove for when the nights are cooler, albeit the house is very well insulated.

Neighborhood

About the neighborhood

Whiting Bay is a village located around 8 miles south of the main ferry terminal connecting us to the mainland. It is, in our opinion, one of the nicest places to live on the island. It has a sandy beach with shallow waters perfect for paddling or swimming. There are several lovely walks which start in or around the village, including one which takes you to the beautiful Glenashdale falls, and another which takes you out to the Kings Cross headland where there are beautiful views to Holy Isle, Lamlash Bay, and Goat Fell and the surrounding mountains. The village has a local pub which serves food, a village shop, and a couple of cafes. Lamlash and Brodick are nearby villages with supermarkets, 4 and 8 miles away respectively. Whiting Bay is a great base for exploring the Isle of Arran. The island is often referred to as "Scotland in Miniature", having as it does a diverse range of scenery and terrain, from the rolling meadows of the south end, to the endless beaches on the west coast with views to the Mull of Kintyre and over to Ireland, contrasting with the mountainous rugged North of the Island. All of this diversity is easily accessible from Whiting Bay. The food and drink on offer around the island is fantastic. There are a couple of craft breweries, the quirky Arran Botanicals beachhouse serving cocktails on the beach, two distilleries where you can sample the local malt whisky ..... if all this isn't enough to keep you occupied, then the mainland is a short ferry ride away, from either Brodick or Lochranza; Glasgow can be reached in around two hours (including the hour ferry journey). Islay, Jura, and the Mull of Kintyre are easily accessible from the Lochranza ferry.

We (Sarah and Mikey) have two kids, a wee boy called Georgie aged 11, and a wee girl called Muireann, aged 9 (as at early 2026!). We moved to the Isle of Arran in 2015 having lived in Edinburgh previously. We love hillwalking, cycling, paddleboarding, and wild swimming, but we also enjoy being able to visit the mainland occasionally, Glasgow is only a couple of hours away with the ferry to mainland based only a 20 minute drive.
